If you are reading this blog post, my guess is you are either pregnant in your first trimester, if that is the case CONGRATULATIONS!! Or you are raising a “judgey” eyebrow at the words first trimester and smoothie diet in the same sentence. I would totally raise an eyebrow too and even be concerned. Let me assure you, this is not a blog post about losing weight while pregnant or how not to gain too much weight while pregnant. Pinky promise.

37 Weeks Pregnant Exercising

As I write this, I am currently 37 weeks pregnant to the date and I had a conversation with a friend last week, where she shared that she just found out that she is pregnant and she cannot stomach the sight or smell of food. Hearing that took me back to how I felt just a few months ago when I was in my first trimester. It also inspired me to write this post for all the pregnant mamas out there who just want to eat. This is my second pregnancy and it has been completely different than my first. I didn’t experience much morning sickness or loss of appetite with my first daughter, but this time around…WOWZER! I was so nauseous, vomiting weekly, and couldn’t stomach food. I wasn’t eating enough and the result of that left me feeling tired and weak all the time. I also feared that I wasn’t giving my baby the nutrition she needed to grow healthily in my belly. I felt guilty that I did not want to eat for fear of vomiting and feeling worse while also feeling so hungry. It was rough.

So what did I do?

Enter the smoothie diet!

Peanut Butter smoothie gives me such bliss!

This was not a diet where I limited myself to only smoothies and ate nothing else. Instead I incorporated a protein rich, nutrient dense super food smoothie to my diet daily to give my growing baby what she needed that I was not getting in my regular diet. My favorite smoothie to make during my first trimester was a peanut butter smoothie which I called Peanut Butter Bliss. There’s something about peanut butter that is so amazing. It could be memories of eating PB&J sandwiches as a little girl or just the nutty creaminess of peanut butter…but whatever it is…it’s awesome!

Peanut Butter Bliss Smoothie

1 cup ice
1 cup vanilla unsweetened almond milk
2 Tbsp PB ( or peanut butter powder)
1/2 Banana
1 scoop vanilla superfood protein powder
Blend well. Enjoy!

I still drink smoothies in my 37th week of pregnancy and now I even give my toddler the same smoothies I drink to give her the nutrients she needs that she isn’t always getting from her toddler diet of chicken nuggets, broccoli, and cheese sticks!

Pregnancy is a beautiful experience but it is also tough on the body. I know how you feel. I have been there. The first trimester will pass before you know it. I hope my smoothie recipes will help you feel better and get the right food in you for your health and for your babies health.
